Laugharne Castle, south west of Carmarthen, was first established as an earthwork coastal stronghold in the 12th century. It was developed into a stone castle by the de Brian family in the late 13th century and converted into a Tudor Mansion in the 16th century by Sir John Perrott. By 1644 it succumbed to Parliamentarian gunfire and siege in the Civil War and was never occupied again
